Doctors are trained, licensed and accountable, so a treatment absent from their toolkit is assumed to have failed a test somewhere. The reasoning works well for drugs that have been assessed and rejected, and badly for anything that does not fit the shape of a prescription. Doctors are also gatekeepers of time and money, and a treatment needing forty minutes does not fit a fifteen-minute slot, however good the evidence.</div><div class="notion-text notion-block-40146d038db581e8afdfda57c4ee34d4">There is also a version of the argument that is really about status. In the 1980s, before single-use needles were standard, acupuncture was practised in some settings with needles cleaned between patients, and bloodborne viruses were poorly understood. A needle that had been in someone&#x27;s tissue was a needle that had been in someone&#x27;s blood.
