Book a session — Calendly
Overview
No. One session can bring relief, especially for an acute problem, but the protocols evaluated in trials usually involve eight to twelve sessions over six to ten weeks. Anyone promising a definitive result in one appointment is overselling.
Where this idea comes from
It comes from the marketing of single sessions: easier to sell than a course, and it fits the logic of a one-off purchase. The consultation then becomes a service consumed rather than a treatment followed.
It also comes from a real experience: some people feel a clear change after the first session, particularly for pain or anxiety. That reaction is real, but a first response is not a cure, and confusing the two leads to stopping too early or continuing for nothing.
A third source is the calendar. A private practice earns per session, so a short plan is commercially attractive. A practitioner who offers a single appointment without review is not necessarily dishonest, but the structure of the offer deserves to be questioned.
What Chinese medicine says
In TCM, treatment is organised in courses. The classical logic distinguishes the acute phase, where sessions are close together, from the consolidation phase, where they are spaced out. The aim is not to accumulate sessions but to shift a pattern, then let it hold.
This is why the practitioner sets a plan from the first session: a number of sessions, a frequency, and a review point. The plan is an hypothesis about your response, and it must be revised on the basis of what actually happens.
What the research says
The protocols in the major trials are explicit on this point. Vickers et al. (J Pain, 2018) pool trials that typically deliver six to fifteen sessions over several weeks, and the effect is measured at one, three and twelve months after the end of treatment.
Linde et al. (Cochrane, 2009) describe migraine prophylaxis protocols of about twelve sessions over eight weeks, with a follow-up period of several months. Yan et al. (Cancer Med, 2023) and Kim and Lee (Am J Chin Med, 2021) report similar structures for nausea and insomnia.
What is established: a single session is not the tested unit, and the observed effects are those of a course. What is debated: the optimal number, which probably varies by condition and by patient. What is unknown: how to identify, at the outset, those who will respond in two sessions.
What to expect in practice
A realistic plan looks like this: a first session with a full assessment, four to six sessions to judge the direction, then either a stop or a spaced consolidation. If nothing moves after six sessions, continuing is not persistence, it is avoidance.
At the Centre Équilibre in Grenoble, Ghislaine Morin announces the number of sessions and the review point at the first appointment, and adjusts them on the basis of your own measurements. The TCM dispensary she organises there is a way to test the approach without committing to a long course.
When to consult, and when not to
Consult if you accept a course with a defined review point, and if you can attend regularly during the first weeks. Irregular attendance is the most common reason a plan fails, before any question of technique.
Do not consult if you are looking for an immediate, definitive result, or if the practitioner refuses to state a number of sessions and a review date. Do not start a course while a medical diagnosis is still pending.
One useful habit: write down your baseline before the first session. Number of pain days, hours of sleep, number of migraine attacks. Without it, any change becomes a feeling, and feelings are poor guides for deciding whether to continue.
Frequently asked questions
How many sessions before I feel something?
Often two to four for pain or anxiety, sometimes later for chronic digestive or sleep problems. A complete absence of change after four well-conducted sessions is a useful signal: it argues for stopping rather than adding sessions indefinitely.
Do I need sessions for life?
No. Many patients come occasionally, during a relapse or a difficult period, without continuous follow-up. A monthly session forever is not a standard of TCM, it is a commercial habit. Decide case by case, with a stated objective each time.
Can I stop whenever I want?
Yes, at any time, and without justifying yourself. A course is a proposal, not a contract. What is useful is to say why you stop, because your feedback helps the practitioner adjust, and because an unexplained drop-out often hides a disappointment worth discussing.
